Using a co-ordinated multidisciplinary team (MDT) of healthcare professionals is an effective approach in managing the treatment of patients with cancer, providing tailored support, and improving patient outcomes. This collaborative approach promotes shared decision-making and adaptive strategies, and enables individualised patient care. In this review article, the author reflects on the latest advancements in the MDT approach to cancer care shared at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress 2021.

This symposium review looks at the devastating global impact of lung cancer, a disease that claimed almost 2 million lives in 2020. Despite recent advances in research and the development of innovative therapies available to patients, lung cancer remains the world’s leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality.

Patients with cancer require meticulous, co-ordinated, and individualised management from oncologists and other healthcare professionals. To meet all the needs of the patient, a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach is favoured, enabling improved decision making and a better clinical outcome. Interestingly, this approach has been associated with improved overall survival and reduced rates of cancer recurrence compared with non-MDT care.
