Prof Fernando Perez-Ruiz opened the symposium, which focussed on the current unmet need in
controlling gout and associated comorbidities with current standard of care. Prof Till Uhlig reviewed the epidemiology and pathogenesis of the disease and Prof Thomas Bardin discussed the burden of gout and its comorbidities. Prof Pascal Richette examined the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) treatment guidelines and best clinical practices in treating the disease. Prof Alexander So expanded on why current treatment strategies for gout are not reaching satisfactory disease outcomes. Prof Perez-Ruiz and Prof Bardin focussed on dual therapy with new-in-class uricosuric lesinurad, explaining its mode of action and the associated clinical studies, respectively.
