United Kingdom, December 1, 2016: Our penultimate eJournal is here: this year’s EMJ Gastroenterology is full of material for those with a passion for all things ‘gastro’. We are confident that this edition will provide you with opportunities to delve into novel and timely research featuring abstracts and articles from a range of areas including hepatitis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and eosinophilic oesophagitis. We also have the highlights from this year’s United European Gastroenterology (UEG) Week which brought together experts and colleagues from across the field to share their experiences and knowledge.
This year, Vienna played host to the must-attend gastroenterology event of the year, UEG Week. With 13,300 specialists in attendance, the event encompassed the shared mission of advancing gastroenterological care across the globe. Featured in this year’s highlights included a new publication from the Rome Foundation named the Rome IV classification, as well as examining protein in wheat in regard to inflammation, and a breakthrough for IBS patients. We also have a selection of interviews from our esteemed Editorial Board.
Accompanying our congress coverage, we also have a range of abstracts from a selection of the attendees who presented at this year’s prestigious event. It includes topics concerning hepatitis B, C, and D, rectal tumours, polyps, and colonoscopy, as well as topics relating to the pancreas, the oesophagus, and IBS.
As always we have included a selection of articles to complement our congress coverage, including this year’s Editor’s Pick from Jayaraman et al. who assess one of the most widely prescribed drugs worldwide: proton pump inhibitors. Melvin et al. evaluate the controversial topic of altering food preferences to sustain weight lost after gastric bypass surgery. Hopp, Ma and Shaffer, and Walsh all provide excellent discussions of eosinophilic oesophagitis, including discussions on its history, treatment, and its future. Pecere et al. deliberate over the potential for biological embedding within intestinal-based treatment and finally, Ahmed provides an important piece on the most prevalent complications of gastro-oesophageal reflex disease, Barrett’s oesophagus.
