Prolonged and Heavy Bleeding During Menopause Tied to Increased Tiredness

A NEW study reveals a strong link between abnormal uterine bleeding and fatigue during the menopause transition (MT), highlighting the need for greater clinical awareness of these symptoms.

Researchers analysed data from 2,329 women enrolled in the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation (SWAN) and found that heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) and prolonged menstrual bleeding (PMB) significantly increased the odds of experiencing fatigue-related symptoms. Women who experienced three or more episodes of HMB in the previous six months were 1.62 times more likely to feel tired and 1.44 times more likely to feel worn out. Similarly, women with three or more episodes of PMB were less likely to feel energized or “full of pep.”

These findings underscore the impact of excessive menstrual bleeding on energy levels and overall well-being, making it essential for healthcare providers to recognise and address bleeding irregularities as a contributing factor to fatigue during menopause. The study highlights the importance of educating women about potential health consequences and ensuring that excessive menstrual bleeding is not overlooked as a normal part of the transition.
