Early-Life Sugar Restriction Linked to Lower Adult Cancer Risk

EARLY-LIFE sugar restriction may substantially reduce the risk of several cancers in adulthood, research shows.

Analysing data from UK Biobank participants born between 1951 and 1956, researchers found that as well as reduced cancer risk, sugar rationing within the first 1000 days of life was also associated with slow biological aging.

Sugar Rationing Provides Natural Experiment

Excess sugar consumption has been implicated in cancer through mechanisms including insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and metabolic reprogramming. However, whether sugar consumption early in life has a causal influence on cancer risk in adulthood has remained unclear.

To investigate this, researchers exploited the abrupt end of sugar rationing in the UK in September 1953 examining whether exposure to sugar rationing during the first 1,000 days of life was associated with cancer incidence decades later.

This allowed them to compare 64,761 individuals with differing levels of exposure to sugar restrictions during a critical period of early development.

The analysis found that the longer participants were exposed to sugar rationing during their first 1,000 days of life, the lower their risk of developing cancer in adulthood.

Lower Risk Across Five Cancer Types

Early-life exposure to sugar rationing was associated with reductions in the incidence of five cancers.

The strongest association was observed for liver and intrahepatic bile duct cancer Reduced incidence was also observed for prostate cancer, lung cancer, rectal cancer, and breast cancer.

The findings suggest that nutritional conditions during early development may have consequences for cancer risk many decades later.

Early Diet May Shape Lifelong Eating Habits

Researchers identified two potential pathways that could help explain the long-term associations.

The first was behavioural. Participants exposed to sugar rationing during early life consumed less sugar, ate smaller quantities of food, and maintained healthier and more diverse diets approximately five decades later.

The researchers suggested that this pattern was consistent with taste preferences established during a critical developmental period persisting throughout life.

A second, biological pathway was also identified. Participants exposed to early-life sugar rationing had longer leukocyte telomeres, corresponding to approximately 2.2 fewer years of biological aging. They also had lower levels of Granzyme B, a finding indicating reduced chronic immune activation.

Implications for Early-Life Nutrition

The findings provide evidence that sugar intake during early development may influence health across the life course through both persistent dietary behaviours and biological mechanisms.

The researchers concluded that early nutritional environments may play an important role in determining lifelong disease risk, with the results carrying implications for early-life nutrition guidance and policies surrounding added sugar.
