CDC Warns of Oropouche Virus Sexual Transmission Risk

Microbiology & Infectious Diseases

NINETY cases of imported Oropouche virus have been reported across five states, primarily in Florida, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC has issued interim recommendations aimed at preventing potential sexual transmission of the virus, which poses particular risks to infected pregnant women passing the virus to their fetuses and the possibility of poor fetal outcomes.

Although no cases of sexual transmission have been documented, the CDC acknowledges growing concerns raised by recent scientific studies. Pregnant women infected with Oropouche may face serious fetal complications, prompting heightened caution among travelers to affected areas.

To mitigate the risk of transmission, the CDC advises that men diagnosed with Oropouche use condoms or abstain from sexual activity for a period of 6 weeks from the onset of symptoms. This guidance also applies to those who exhibit Oropouche symptoms during travel or within 2 weeks of returning home. They are encouraged to consult healthcare providers about testing options and adhere to the same 6-week precautionary measures.

Furthermore, the CDC has recommended that males displaying symptoms should refrain from semen donation for 6 weeks. Those who may have been exposed to the virus during their travels should also consider waiting 6 weeks post-travel before donating.
As the situation evolves, the CDC continues to gather data on the Oropouche virus, urging travelers to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
