Jonathan Sackier discusses the role of ethics in medical practice. Jonathan will take us through the basis for ethical thinking, touch on the different types of ethics and related concepts, and discuss how ethics is viewed in other human pursuits and professions. In medicine, the oft-quoted, yet misunderstood, Hippocratic Oath is deemed to be the “sine qua non” of ethical healing behaviour. Bringing a modern perspective to this ancient concept, Jonathan will examine how doctors should behave in their interactions with patients and publishers, and will analyse the profoundly important standards that medical industry and governmental organisations have to consider and uphold.
