United Kingdom, October 20, 2016: Welcome to the latest edition of EMJ Respiratory, which contains updates and research on a range of topics from the field of respiratory health. Inside, there is a review of the major talking points and events of the recent ERS 2016 Congress, a selection of summaries of presentations at the event, and interviews conducted with Editorial Board members from this journal. Additionally, there are a selection of peer-reviewed papers that have been contributed by prominent names from within the field.
Held in the city of London, UK, from 3rd–7th September, this year’s ERS Congress utilised the topic of air pollution as a major discussion point. Educational and promotional activities were provided to assist doctors in providing patients with all the information they require to maintain healthy lungs in the face of significant levels of air pollution. This year’s congress was busier than ever, with 21,638 attendees and 4,100 abstracts presented. In the congress review section, the most exciting research and information at this year’s event is presented, including a possible link between menopause and decreased lung function, and how exposure to traffic pollution may affect sleeping habits. In the abstract reviews section, research on the topics of childhood wheeze, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and mediastinal adenopathy feature amongst many others.
There are also a number of high-quality peer-reviewed articles from across the field. Migliore discusses the recent advancements in the area of thoracic surgery and lung transplantation, and the possible impact these may have in the future. Gemine and Lewis consider the growing body of evidence that suggests smoking cessation should be prioritised in patients who have been diagnosed with lung cancer, and Sarkar analyses the epidemiology, diagnosis, and therapy of increased arterial stiffness in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.
