This webinar will discuss the increased incidence of venous thromboembolism in cancer patients and the safe and effective use of oral anticoagulants to improve outcomes. Chaired by Prof Jonathan Sackier, we will learn about the importance of raising awareness in both oncologists and cancer patients regarding the increased risks of venous thromboembolism and the signs and symptoms to look for. Dr Mark Carrier and Dr Harry Gibbs will discuss the most effective treatment pathways with a Q&A session hosted by Prof Sackier.

Dr Marc Carrier

Dr Marc Carrier is Head of the Division of Hematology in the Department of Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital. He is also a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa, and a Senior Scientist in the Clinical Epidemiology Program of The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. His research focus is venous thromboembolic disease and cancer, including cancer screening, prevention and management. In 2015 he was the recipient of the prestigious Dr. Michel Chrétien Researcher of the Year Award for his study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that improves care for VTE patients around the world.
Dr Harry Gibbs

Dr Harry Gibbs is currently the Program Director of Outpatients Program, and Deputy Director of General Medicine in The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, as well as Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at Monash University. His interests are cardiovascular and general medicine, with a particular interest in thrombosis and anticoagulant therapy. Dr Gibbs is currently a board member of The Australian and New Zealand Society for Vascular Surgery.
