Updates to the Guidelines for Hospitalised Patients with Diabetes

A GUIDELINE UPDATE from the Endocrine Society has provided an update on the current recommendations for hospitalised patients with diabetes. Presented at ENDO 2022, this update to clinical practice guidelines supports the use of goal-directed management alongside the use of innovative technologies to monitor glucose levels. This update also encourages patient education in diabetes self-management prior to discharge for a reduced likelihood of readmission.

Entitled, ‘Management of Hyperglycemia in Hospitalized Patients in Non-Critical Care Settings: An Endocrine Society Clinical Practice Guideline’, these updated recommendations focus on non-critically ill adults with diabetes or recently diagnosed stress-induced hyperglycaemia. Previously updated in 2012, these guidelines refresh and revise the standard of care for glycaemic management in these patients, based on the Institute of Medicine standards. The Endocrine Society’s Clinical Practice Guideline Program provides evidence-based recommendations to clinicians, established by a multidisciplinary panel of experts.

Key points from the 2022 update include the use of continuous glucose monitoring systems for effective glycaemic self-management in patients using an insulin pump therapy prior to admission with hospital oversight; and the education of diabetes self-management for hospitalised patients to improve glycaemic control following discharge. Mary Korytkowski, University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA explained, “This guideline addresses several important aspects of care specific to inpatient management of non-critically ill patients with diabetes or newly recognized hyperglycaemia that have the potential to improve clinical outcomes in the hospital as well as following discharge.”
