Affecting a staggering 10% of the female population worldwide, of which 30–50% have resultant fertility issues, endometriosis is one of the most important topics within reproductive health. These statistics not only highlight the importance of treatment programmes for the removal of pain in these women, but also the impact the disease has on their fertility. In this latest edition of EMJ Reproductive Health, Carniero et al. provide a detailed and essential review of the current status of endometriosis.
Correct and early diagnosis of endometriosis is of great significance if the patient’s fertility is to be preserved. In the review, the authors detail patient selection and diagnostic criteria in addition to various options for managing the disease, including how best to preserve fertility and monitor disease progression. Weighing up the benefits and risks of surgical procedures, the authors explain some of the possible surgical safety concerns and fertility repercussions after undergoing surgical treatment.
The authors focus especially on the fertility options that are available for women with endometriosis. Techniques such as the cryopreservation of embryos or mature oocytes are carefully considered to identify which approaches are most appropriate for women who wish to conceive. In addition, the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of these women is highlighted, including counselling and informing patient of the risks, benefits, and costs of such approaches.
Not only does this review provide a summary of current literature, but can be used as a tool in the day-to-day practice of reproductive health in fertility clinics. By acting as a guide to physicians and gynaecologists, this review is set to improve treatments plans for endometriosis patients.
