George Bakris was educated at Indiana University, USA, obtaining his medical degree from the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He earnt his residency at the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System, Chicago, and the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA, with his Fellowship at the University of Chicago Medicine. He is Board certified in Internal Medicine, and is a member of multiple medical professional organisations, such as the American College of Physicians (ACP), American Society of Hypertension (ASH), American Diabetes Association (ADA), American Society of Nephrology (ASN), the National Kidney Foundation, and the American Heart Association (AHA).
In addition to his impressive contribution to various organisations, and large body of published work, George has also served on over 15 editorial boards, and has a host of awards and honours to his name, including an honorary degree from the University of Athens in Greece, and the Irvine Page-Alva Bradley Lifetime Achievement Award to acknowledge his outstanding contributions to medicine.
While studying, George was part of an excellent band, though he insists that he made his name in medicine, and not as a musician.
