Introducing EMJ Oncology 4.1

United Kingdom, November 15, 2016: Welcome to this year’s edition of EMJ Oncology, a must-read for all those with a passion for oncology. As 2016 draws to a close, this publication offers the opportunity to reflect on the highlights of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress 2016, enjoy a superb selection of peer-reviewed articles by experts in their field, and consider the wisdom contained within a pair of interviews with renowned oncologists.

This year, Copenhagen played host to the annual ESMO Congress which took place over 5 days, welcoming 20,522 participants, representing a record attendance. More than 1,640 studies were presented, including 47 late-breaking trials and over 1,500 posters. The leading countries contributing to this year’s vast number of delegates were: the USA, France, the UK, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, China, Japan, and Denmark. The Scientific Chair of the ESMO 2016 Congress, Prof Andrés Cervantes enthused about the value of the congress, noting: “This is certainly a record number, but what is most important is the good news for physicians and patients in many areas of unmet needs such as ovarian cancer, lung cancer, renal cell carcinoma, sarcomas, and other less common diseases.”

Alongside congress coverage, a series of fascinating articles are presented. This edition’s Editor’s Pick is an engrossing and timely read by Nielsen et al., covering the physiological manifestations of treatment-induced muscular toxicities in paediatric oncology and moving on to assess the value of structured exercise as a focussed countermeasure. The prognostic potential of somatic mutations in the context of stem cell transplantation for myelodysplastic patients is discussed by Blau et al. Adil et al. have penned a paper considering the genetics, pathology, risk stratification, clinical characteristics, investigation, and treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumours. Körner et al. summarise the role microRNAs play in therapy for breast cancer, one of the deadliest cancer types globally; Kaggwa et al. report on a study conducted at the Mulago National Referral Hospital, Kampala, Uganda, evaluating the utility of high-dose external beam radiation therapy combined with bilateral subcapsular orchidectomy in the relief of bladder outlet obstruction caused by prostate cancer. Additionally, Lipski et al. consider the latest indications for endoscopic endonasal surgery, as well as detailing the advantages of endoscopic surgery for aggressive benign tumours.
