This webinar is intended for healthcare professionals and is supported by an educational grant from Viatris and independently created by EMJ Learning.
Learning Objectives:
The purpose of this webinar is to help healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and treatment to better understand and manage cIAI in adults.
This activity aims to equip learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate and manage patients with cIAI, taking into account the role of source control, antimicrobial stewardship, and a critical evaluation of therapeutic options using clinical case studies as examples. During the webinar, they will discuss the use of alternative antibiotics, tailoring antibiotics to patients’ needs, and future strategies for cIAI management.
By the end of this webinar, practitioners should be able to:
- Describe complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAI) from a pathophysiological standpoint and the burden.
• Identify the relevant risk factors and clinical features associated with cIAI - Evaluate and interpret the current guidelines for the management of cIAI, focusing on antibiotic therapy and interventions such as source control.
• Explain the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of current treatments (mechanism of action, pharmacologic properties), considering their indications and limitations.
• Identify and critique the application of emerging therapies for the treatment of cIAI.
• Describe the importance of appropriate patient care that incorporates effective antimicrobial stewardship, by balancing effective treatment of cIAI while minimising unnecessary antibiotic exposure and implementing source control.
