Ron Daniels, Founder and Executive Director of UK Sepsis Trust, and Vice President of the Global Sepsis Alliance, completed his Bachelor’s in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Birmingham in the UK. He obtained his diploma in Medical Sciences at Keele University in 2001. He now leads the team responsible for much of the policy and media engagement around sepsis in the UK and internationally, including the adoption of the 2017 Resolution on Sepsis by the World Health Organization (WHO). Daniels is also co-developer of the ‘Sepsis Six’ treatment bundle, which is in use in most British hospitals and 28 other countries around the world. In 2016, Daniels was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to patients.
Daniels’ expertise lies in translational medicine and leadership. As a National Health Service (NHS) Consultant in Critical Care in Birmingham, UK, Daniels has worked with the NHS over the last 7 years to ensure that more than 80% of patients presenting with suspected sepsis in England now receive appropriate antimicrobials rapidly. He is ever mindful of the perceived conflict, and the synergies and need for collaboration, with the antimicrobial stewardship agenda.
In the last 60 months, Daniels has delivered 237 scientific talks including to the WHO, European Commission, and Royal College of Physicians; chaired 36 sessions and facilitated 9 debates at international meetings; published 21 articles in peer-reviewed publications; and given over 150 national newspaper and television interviews.
