They discuss Barrett’s career in the USA and in other countries where he volunteered, and why he did not continue his career in research. They also talk about the vilification of fats and how social media can be used as a way of alerting healthcare professionals when new research is available, as well as Barrett’s work with Mercy Ships, an international non-profit organisation, where he performed surgeries while on a boat.

Speaker bio:

William Barrett grew up in New Jersey, USA, before obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in legal studies from Rice University in Houston, Texas, USA. However, Barrett did not continue his legal career as he became interested in medicine and surgery while there, and went on to earn a medical degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, where he graduated with honours.

Barrett completed his internship and residency at the George Washington University in Washington D.C., USA, and was certified by the American Board of Surgery with additional qualifications in hyperbaric medicine and wound care. Barrett went on to work as a Clinical Instructor at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, Norman, USA, and at other institutions as a surgeon.

In his spare time, Barrett is a keen runner and held a high school state record. He also enjoys sport fishing, skiing, scuba diving, astronomy, and cooking.
