The pair explore how we can strengthen the research influence of nurses, including the 70@70 programme, as well as Shepherd’s initiatives to encourage a career in nursing and research in nursing.

Maggie Shepherd is an Honorary Clinical Professor at the University of Exeter Medical School, and Consultant Nurse and Associate Director for Research at the Royal Devon University Hospital, Exeter, UK. Shepherd originally graduated from King’s College London, UK, as a Registered General Nurse, and went on to work as a Diabetes Specialist Nurse for 8 years, before gaining a Bachelor’s degree in Health Studies from the University of Surrey in Guildford, UK, and moving to Exeter to join their diabetes genetics research team. Having graduated from the University of Exeter with a PhD in Medical Science, Shepherd has gone on to work in both research and clinical settings. Her research focuses on a range of topics, including the impact of genetic testing in diabetes, particularly with regards to changing from long-term insulin to tablet treatment; as well as misdiagnosis, patient experience, and how research findings may impact clinical care.
