Smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and is responsible for around 25% of all cardiovascular disease-related deaths worldwide. Complete cessation of smoking is the most effective way of reducing the associated cardiovascular risks, but many people find it difficult to stop using cigarettes. The European Society of Cardiology Congress (ESC) 2024, held in London, UK, included several sessions discussing tobacco harm reduction in relation to cardiovascular disease, with a particular focus on e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn products as alternatives to cigarettes.
