Introducing EMJ Diabetes 5.1

United Kingdom, October 31, 2017: EMJ would like to welcome you to the latest edition of EMJ Diabetes, a journal dedicated to detailing the vital progression in the treatment of diabetes over the last year. A comprehensive review of the key highlights from this year’s 53rd Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) is included, as well as abstract reviews of data presented at the congress, penned by the presenters themselves. Alongside world-leading peer-reviewed articles, you will also find interviews with esteemed members of the EMJ Diabetes Editorial Board.

EASD 2017 was held in the stunning city of Lisbon, Portugal, also home to the world’s oldest association dedicated to the treatment of diabetes, the Association for the Protection of Diabetics of Portugal (APDP). The EASD Annual Meeting grows from strength to strength, with 15,000 participants in attendance at this year’s event and an outstanding number of abstracts submitted, of which 1,200 were hand-picked for presentation over the course of the five-day meeting.

An independent review of the highpoints from the EASD congress is included in the latest edition of this eJournal, including details of the EASD President’s, Prof Juleen Zierath, passionate speech that set out the aims of the event, highlighting the need to improve research and educational programmes to enable the society to reach its goals. EMJ Diabetes 5.1 also contains reviews of a select few of the 1,200 abstracts presented at congress and the Abstract Review section details some of the latest progress of ongoing diabetes research projects. Furthermore, three insightful interviews with members of the Editorial Board are featured, in which world-leading experts detail how they began their career in diabetes and outline their hopes for the future of the field.

Finally, this latest issue presents high-quality, peer-reviewed articles outlining state-of-the-art approaches to diabetes healthcare. The Editor’s Pick is the informative and intriguing review of the progression of cardiovascular disease in Type 2 diabetes mellitus, entitled: ‘Addressing hypertension in the patient with Type 2 diabetes mellitus: Pathogenesis, goals, and therapeutic approach’ by Rizvi. The author notes that people with Type 2 diabetes mellitus suffering from hypertension are much more likely to develop cardiovascular disease and subsequently details the effective treatment and management strategies for these patients.
