FOCUS – Foundation Course Using Simulation

June 26, 2015

Multiprofessional simulation training for FY1 and FY2 doctors and acute care nurses who manage acutely ill patients.

A full day of simulated practice at managing acute medical and surgical emergencies in our high-fidelity simulation suite.

  • simulated scenarios based on real emergencies commonly encountered on the wards for A&E
  • systematic approach to the management of sick patients, for both real life and for exams
  • resuscitation practice in a risk-free environment
  • review of clinical management as per national and local guidelines
  • structured debrief and feedback on both clinical and human factor aspects.

The day is not an assessment. It is simply a learning opportunity for you to practise your skills at managing common medical emergencies. You are not expected to role-play as it is important that you behave as you would in real life. The focus of feedback after each scenario is on the clinical management of the case and will also include non-technical aspects such as team working.

Curriculum mapping: Foundation curriculum point 3:0. Recognition and management of the acutely ill patient

Feedback from previous participants:

“Scenarios and feedback very useful, clear and helpful. Very structured day, clear teaching aims.”
“Realistic practice, constructive feedback. Clinical teaching on management of acute scenarios.”
“Focuses on real aspects of training. Same stress level as real.”
“Good variety of cases. Well structured and organised sessions. On time. Good feedback sessions.”

FOCUS is facilitated by our experienced simulation Faculty from Southend and Broomfield hospitals.
